To differentiate between medical masks and non-medical masks, one can observe their appearance and packaging. These factors provide crucial information to identify the purpose of the mask. Medical masks are typically designed to meet certain standards, such as ASTM Level 1, 2, or 3, and are often labeled as "surgical masks." They are usually made of three layers of material and have a nose wire to provide a secure fit. On the other hand, non-medical masks may come in various styles and designs and are often made of a single layer of fabric or material. Their packaging may not have any information regarding ASTM standards or medical use. Therefore, it is essential to carefully inspect masks before purchasing or using them to ensure one is choosing the right type for their needs.

The use of masks with filter valves is a practical solution to prevent the penetration of harmful particles such as droplets and microorganisms. However, it's worth noting that these masks are not considered medical masks as per the Chinese Medical Protective Mask Standard GB 19803-2010. According to Article 4.3 of the standard, masks should not have an exhalation valve to prevent the exhalation of these harmful particles and avoid harming others.

It's worth noting that civil masks can possess an exhalation valve since it reduces exhalation resistance and enables prolonged usage, which is beneficial for the wearer.

To ensure transparency and accuracy of information regarding mask products sold through formal channels, it is recommended that the minimum unit package should include critical product details such as the name, standards implemented, and level of protection. These details can serve as a distinguishing factor among similar products. For instance, masks that have the term "Medical" or "Surgical" in both English and the local language on their packaging can be deemed to be medical masks. This practice will promote accountability and help consumers make informed decisions while purchasing masks.
